Your child’s visit to the dentist may be a new experience for both of you. Our goal is PREVENTION. With proper care, it is now possible for a child to never develop a cavity. We want to make you and your child aware of the causes of dental disease and what can be done to prevent future disease. Good dietary habits, good oral hygiene, proper exposure to fluorides, sealants and regular checkups are a few of the preventive measures we will discuss during the critical years of growth for your child.
If this is your child’s first visit, you can help prepare your child for this experience. Avoid letting your child know of any fear or anxiety you may feel about dental visits. Make the dental visit a fun adventure. Please avoid any fear provoking terms such as “hurt, drill and needle.” Statements like “the doctor won’t hurt you” should be avoided. Your positive attitude and example in dental health matters will be the most important factor in how your child will respond to this experience. A positive approach is essential, as it will probably mold his attitude for many years.
The procedure at the first visit will depend on your child’s age, personality and individual needs. He may progress from simply getting familiar with the room and people to a complete examination, cleaning and topical fluoride treatment. Preventive measures will be discussed. In our effort to keep the number of X-rays to a bare minimum, X-rays are not taken on a routine basis. Rather, they are taken only if a specific dental situation warrants it.
Your aim as a parent and ours as pediatric dentists are the same – to keep your child’s teeth and mouth in good health and to make the process of doing so a pleasant one for the child, parents and dentist.
